HAND KNOTTED RUGS are made by skilled weavers who hand tie every knot. Traditionally made with wool or silk, the weaver ties each knot around the warp threads one at a time.  The rug can consist of 25 to over 9000 knots per square inch and it can take many months to produce just one rug.

PROS:  Also called Oriental rugs, hand knotted and hand woven rugs are often collectibles. The quality of these rugs depends on numerous factors, such as the knot count, dyes used and quality of the yarns. The life span of these rugs is greater and therefore usually a better value for your money.

CONS:  Since hand-knotted rugs take the longest to make, the cost is typically greater than hand-tufted or machine-made rugs.

TUFTED RUGS are made differently than knotted rugs. Colored yarns are poked into place through a primary backing with a tufting gun, then cut to create the pile. Then a layer of latex adhesive is rolled onto the back of the rug to hold the tufts in place. Last, a secondary backing and finishing hems are glued to the back to complete the rug.

PROS: Many modern rugs are constructed in this way to make them more affordable to a larger market.

CONS: The latex adhesive may give off a noxious petroleum-type odor. Those with chemical sensitivities might be adversely affected by this odor. Unfortunately, cleaning and deodorizing the rug does not fix the problem.  Also, over time the latex will begin to break down and decay, causing a silty powder to fall from the back of the rug through the backing material, which may also become loosened from the rug. At this point, you will need to decide whether to dispose of the rug or have your rug cleaning professional remove and replace the latex adhesive inside and apply a new backing. Note: The cost of performing this procedure may exceed the cost of replacement.
